John Geiger has written on Sylvain Voyer's art in a new catalogue
John Geiger has contributed an essay to an important new catalogue on the art of Sylvain Voyer. The catalogue has been published by the Art Gallery of Alberta in conjunction with its major survey of the work of Voyer—one of Alberta's most important artists. From Pop-inspired paintings of the 1960s through the humble studies of local landmarks in the 1970s, the exhibition culminates in Voyer's dazzling canola fields and quietly grand landscapes of Southern Alberta and Mexico. The exhibition runs from January 17 to March 22, 2009. The catalogue reproduces many of the paintings in colour. Geiger's essay, titled "An Extraordinary Archipelago: Sylvain Voyer and the Art of Place", looks at Voyer's achievements in the face of the rigid formalist hold on the Edmonton art scene over many years. The exhibition is curated by the AGA's assistant curator Marcus Miller.
